Computer Lab
Overview: For over 14 years, Vintage has successfully fulfilled its roll as a technology magnet teaching students to use technology as a tool to assist in their educational studies. Students receive weekly lessons in the computer lab in the use of computers and popular educational applications such as word processing, keyboarding, desktop publishing, slide show presentations, multi-media presentations, and internet research. Students and staff are assisted by our full time Microcomputer Support Assistant ensuring competent technology instruction with lessons building students' technology skills from year to year. Use of technology is continued in the classrooms at the class computer centers.
The Latest:
Spring 2009 saw the arrival of a new Apple server and 29 new intel Apple iMacs. The eMacs that were replaced by new iMacs were moved into classrooms. We continue to work towards obtaining six more iMacs (expected class sizes maximum limit at Vintage to increase to 34 students Fall 09) to complete the Computer Lab so that all students will have access to computers running the same operating system and applications.
Below, second grade students are busy at work on the new Apple iMacs. The older eMacs will be moved into classrooms to update their obsolote equipment. Vintage continues to raise funds to complete the lab upgrade.
Ubuntu, an Linux alternative operating system -- which is free (including future upgrades) is being tried out on dontated PCs as a cost saving alternative that will allow Vintage to place more computers in the classroom. Free office programs as well as some free educational applicatons (Edubuntu) and the popular browser, Firefox, are being installed. Learn more about Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com.
History of the Computer Lab:
Vintage's technology program took off in June 1995 with the dedication of a classroom as a computer lab supporting 32 students at one time. Funding to set up Vintage's technology program initially came from the California National Guard through the Office of Student Integration. The program extended into the classroom with the placement of computers and printers. The school and lab are networked to centrally stored work on the lab's server and to use the internet. The school primarily uses the Apple Macintosh operating systems. Funding to maintain our technology program and upgrade equipment and software comes mostly from donations and fundraisers. Our computer lab received a much needed upgrade in March 2005 with the acquisition of 32 Apple eMac OSX computers.
Listed below are some of the technology items available to staff and students at Vintage:
